I live in New York and experience this same kind of harassment all the time when I go out alone. Once, a guy even followed me off the subway and into a bar ... and only left me alone when a male friend showed up. But if you think that's bad, this level of harassment has even crept into my home, my safe place. When I moved into my new apartment, I did what everyone does: called an electrician, a locksmith, a cable guy, etc. All four men that came to my apartment — *all four* — harassed me about why I was living alone and asked if they could take me out, with one telling me that "whether I liked it or not," he was going to get to know me. Another inappropriately touched my waist as he walked past me.

Although this has been my personal experience, it's certainly not unique, as demonstrated by countless videos like the one above. It's unacceptable, and it needs to stop.

Thankfully, there's a nonprofit out there that's trying to do just that. It's called Hollaback, and you can read more about them here or even donate to their cause here. Sharing this video and spreading the message that this kind of behavior can and will not be tolerated is also totally appreciated. [Source: upworthy.com]
